this one's for the veterans
Scars Unseen was written from lived experience. DRVVYN is a combat veteran, and the emotions throughout the record are rooted in real memories, internal struggles, and the complicated transition from war zones back into everyday life.
The song was never intended to be performative or political. Instead, it was created as an honest emotional outlet — a tribute to veterans who silently carry trauma, memories, anxiety, hypervigilance, grief, and survivor’s guilt while attempting to reintegrate into normal life.
Musically, the record was designed to feel immersive and cinematic rather than polished and commercial. The pacing, atmosphere, and layered textures intentionally mirror emotional tension: moments of silence, emotional distance, and flashes of memory that never fully disappear.
No image. No performance. No distractions.
Just the moment where everything you’ve been holding in finally surfaces. The kind of honesty that isn’t polished or controlled—it just exists. This song lives in that space, where emotion isn’t filtered and nothing is hidden.
It’s not trying to be perfect. It’s trying to be true.
There are several deeply personal layers hidden inside Scars Unseen (For The Vets) that many listeners may not immediately recognize.
The songwriter behind the record is a real combat veteran, which gives the lyrics and delivery an authenticity rooted in actual lived experience rather than fictional storytelling.
The music video is inspired by real events that occurred during convoy security escort missions in Iraq.
Many visual moments in the video intentionally recreate the emotional atmosphere of deployment life — isolation, tension, nighttime movement, uncertainty, and the emotional weight soldiers carry while trying to remain composed.
Several lines throughout the song reference carrying fallen comrades “forward” emotionally, symbolizing how veterans often continue living with the memory of people they served beside.
The title Scars Unseen itself refers to invisible injuries — emotional and psychological wounds that often go unnoticed by the outside world.
Scars unseen they run deep
Internal wars that never sleep
Made it home but not the same
Carrying battles with no name
Boots by the door, sand on the floor
I'm fighting battles from before (from before)
Laugh when I can, numb when I can't (can't)
Some nights I pray (pray)
Some nights I blank
(These scars unseen, a part of me) Yeah
(Silent war the world can't see)
(You're a vet then you agree)
You're just like me—(Just like me)
With scars unseen
With scars unseen—yup
I see the world through different eyes
Still hear echoes when I close mine
Crowds feel loud, but I feel numb
A thousand thoughts, I can't outrun
Some days I'm strong (right)
Some days I break (right)
Trying to breathe with every ache (every ache)
I wear a smile (smile)
So they don't see (smile)
The war still living inside me
I hold the names of who we lost
Carry their light at any cost
I walk for them when I feel weak
They're in the strength I try to keep
I hold the names of who we lost
Carry their light at any cost
I walk for them when I feel weak
Oh yeah, I try and keep with scars
(A part of me)
(Silent war the world can't see)
(You're a vet then you agree)
Oh, you're just like me (just like me)
With scars unseen (with scars unseen)
(A part of me)
(Silent war the world can't see)
(You're a vet then you agree)
(Just like me)
(Scars unseen)
Scars unseen
Still part of me
